What Should I Know About Gastrointestinal Infections?

Not all tummy troubles are created equal. Some will go away quickly and are results of eating something that doesn’t agree with your system, but some are actually signs of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders or infections.

Our AFC Urgent Care South Charlotte team shares more info about GI infections below, so keep reading to learn more!

What Are GI Infections?

Gastrointestinal infections are infections of the digestive system and GI tract that are caused by either bacteria, viruses or parasites. Most GI infections are relatively short-lived, as the infection and symptoms typically go away in just a few days. Some infections and symptoms can last for as long as two weeks, though.

We’ve listed the most common GI infection symptoms below.

Ways to Prevent GI Infections

  • Maintain a healthy diet. Add fiber, lower salt intake, drink lots of water and eat a variety of whole foods rather than processed foods.
  • Stay active. Getting at least 150 minutes per week of physical activity can put you on the right path to a healthy lifestyle.
  • Washing your hands frequently and thoroughly—at least twice a day for 20 seconds at a time.
